Whoa baby,
I tell ya, I'm now convinced:
As silly as a greenhouse seems in the friggin desert and it is a rather odd thing, I admit that, I'm now convinced it's the right thing to do...
After seeing my babies on the wilty side in the late afternoon with temps hovering just above 120F i thought I'd be wise to prop the door open too keep the heat down a bit more at the expense of some humidity conservation...
Well, I did this and low and behold the one plant in full (intense) desert Sun was really showing signs of stress when I checked back an hour later...
All the other plants, which get filtered sun were doing just fine.
So now I'm convinced the greenhouse is the only way to go; here on the outskirts Hell, oops, sin city, meaning in the hot, dry high desert...
I'll still prop the door open but only when the door end of my contraption is on the shady side...
It's an East facing door...
Added fertilizer, and things are looking ok...
That's my update, again advise is always welcome
Best Regards and happy growing
fo
PS. if you happen to use the passive humidity gismo watch out for mosquito larvae in the bucket...I have a paint strainer made for 5 gal. buckets--when I top off the big bucket I place the strainer such that it is in the flow caused by the hose nozzle and so captures the little devils...
Seems to work a treat, regards

It's always something

Hi --
Good pics. The pictures allow me to compare my own crop directly against other people's crops, so I love 'em!
Regarding the temps -- We've been up into the mid to upper 90's now for a few weeks and the plants don't seem to be suffering. We've had higher humidity than you have outside, maybe 40-60% and rain about every other week. I think that as long as the plants' feet are wet (damp not soaked), and the humidity is over 40% they do fine.
Regarding soil and water alkalinity - Our well water runs about 8.2 to 8.4 ph, very alkaline and the soils here are similar, clay. I work many pounds of pelleted sulphur into the soil eveyr year until I stop seeing signs of iron deficiencies, bright green leaves rather than yellowing with green veins. Then I don't put any more in.
Look on the other forum page, the long one with 7 pages of it, for my newest pics and discussion.

Happy Independence Day everyone...
What better way to celebrate than growing your own?
Well,
things are coming along...
So, it gets so very hot here, my poor babies endure 120+F and are truly on the edge of death in the afternoons, then when the sun goes down they stand tall...and well?
Look to be doing just fine.
I planted three Tomato plants and one Burley outside the greenhouse and the tomatoes are growing much faster / better out of doors---the burley sprout didn't make it though the first night.
It was just gone !!!
So all things considered I'm happy to have built my own little piece of Hell, err my greenhouse...
Enjoy your day
Best Regards

Hi all,
Latest update:
First off sorry for not posting sooner--my plants have gone to bloom.
Here's a picture of the very first flower taken 7-30-09.
the Real news is I'm now tobacco free, not nicotine free though, just smoke free.
While Browsing my news link (NPR) I saw an article where the FDA is fixing to ban e-cigarettes.
I knew right than they must be pretty good...
Long story short, I bought one of them gizzmos, and Boy Howdee !!!
What a kick!
Seriously, I just might have found a way to kick the tobbacco smoking habit...
In fact, I'd guess I already have...
My Greenhouse got so hot it melted the roof off, no I'm not kidding...
The center ridge beam is a metal pipe--it just nuked my plastic roof.
Bottomline, my plants are doing better without the roof...
I lose a leaf to heat stroke now and then but over-all
growing Burley in the desert is very much doable.
More pictures soon...
Dang go figure?
I'm smoke free
I'm as shocked as you are
Best Regards

You sure take a good picture, that flower is beautiful.
I looked up that e-cigarette, it looks interesting. I wonder what the anti-smoke nazis will say about it. |

I love the pic of the bloom.
Tobacco flowers smell so good, too.
I was really surprised the plant itself [often clammy] does not have an odor, so common in nightshades.
Ironically, that little bloom is best pollinated by sphinx moths.
