Hi --
I recently finished talking to a man who grows tobacco in Kentucky and he has offered me a limited quantity of whole leaf tobacco by the pound of various types. I got samples and have tried them all and can offer them to forum members at a pretty good price in 5 lbs minimum quantities.
*** DISCLAIMER ***
I have been informed by the Texas state comptroller's office that I must pay the $1.10 an ounce tobacco excise punishment taxes for all tobacco used for smoking or chewing. Therefore I am unable to offer whole leaf tobacco for those purposes. This whole leaf tobacco is being offered for decorative, religious, air-freshening incense or organic pesticide "tobacco tea" uses. In most states, there is no special tobacco taxation on whole leaf tobacco at all, however I must follow the laws and not offer tobacco for smoking or chewing use.
Tobacco Air-Freshening Incense is the answer for improving the air quality of your home. Nothing smells as good as quality whole leaf tobacco burning in your home. I hope to offer recipes for making the tobacco incense at home soon.
RESTOCKED - I have obtained a small quantity of the Virginia Flue-Cured leaf sold on a first-come, first served basis. Let me know fast if you want some as there isn't much of that available.
Due to the total expense of this kind of transaction, I am only able to fill pre-paid orders. I can take a PayPal or check/money order by mail and will be able to ship within a week after the check clears my bank. I am not paying state taxes so if any are due in your state on whole leaf tobacco, you may be responsible for that expense (see above the exemption on "decorative" tobacco). Most states do not currently charge the extra tax for whole leaf, uncut tobacco.
I can only ship by FedEx, so please include your physical address and no PO Box numbers. The cost of shipping will vary upon your location, so I will quote that cost on an order by order basis. For 5-10 lbs, the shipping charge is usually $10-13 plus $2 handling charge. Domestic US orders only please. I will use FedEx Home Delivery shipping unless other arrangements are made. If you have a place of business, it is possible to go with 6-day ground and save a little, maybe $2.
Hi -- I've noticed the pics aren't always showing here, so you can either rightclick on the pic and select SHOW PICTURE or click here for all of them http://s658.photobucket.com/albums/uu302/bob_kemp/
This is a typical flue-cured tobacco type grown for use in cigarettes but offered for sale as a decorative tobacco because of the bright yellow leaf color. This has not been aged, just Flue-Cured - it is straight out of the field and dried in the flue barn. This leaf will have a neutral aroma when used as incense and when air-cured another month or two will lose the slight harshness of fresh leaf and become much sweeter. 5 lbs minimum or mix with different tobacco pounds to make minimum total 5 lbs order, $15 a lbs plus shipping.
Air-cured Burley, May Be Tenn. Or Virginia types
This is a rather mild burley used for blending with the flue-cured tobacco for cigarettes but is offered here as a decorative tobacco because of the brown color of the leaf and the stronger aroma. Mixed 3 or 4 parts Virginia flue-cured to 1 parts air-cured Burley made the closest thing to a commercial cigarette aroma in the the incense I made that I've smelled by using straight tobacco without additives. The burley successfully masked the harsher aroma of the Virginia and I would use this blend as an air-freshener incense without waiting for the Virginia to age. Orders must be paid for before the end of November to in order to be filled. 5 lbs minimum or mix with different tobacco pounds to make minimum total 5 lbs order, $15 a lbs plus shipping.
Dark Fire-Cured For Smokey Air Freshening
The only thing I can say about the aroma of this fire-cured leaf is WOW! Typically used for chew, twist or snuff, but offered here as an air-freshening product, it has the aroma of a smoked leaf! When we opened the package, it made my mouth water! It filled the house with the smell of a hardwood smoker! Orders must be paid for before the end of November to in order to be filled. 5 lbs minimum or mix with different tobacco pounds to make minimum total 5 lbs order, $15 a lbs plus shipping.
NEW! 2008 Dark Air-Cured For Cigar Aroma Air Freshening
This tobacco, used as an incense, will fill the air with a fine cigar filler aroma. Some of the leaves will be complete and without holes and will make a fine decorative tobacco like a cigar wrapper. 5 lbs minimum or mix with different tobacco pounds to make minimum total 5 lbs order, $15 a lbs plus shipping. Be sure to get your orders in fast, the farmers will sell it all at auction as demand is high right now due to lowered planting and too much rain.
Bob, as a first time grower, can you relate to me how much a pound of whole leaf tobacco yields into real tobacco to use? Weight wise?
Thanks Bob. _________________ When Stressed-Smoke and have a drink.
Guy, it is really difficult to say the exact amount, but if you do like I do and use the bottom part of the midrib in the smoke, you should have 80-85% usable tobacco. You will likely get even better yield than that, since the leaf will ship slightly dryer than "case" condition (20% moisture), it will likely be less than 15% moisture content or even less, so you will remoisturize and that will raise the yield up another 5% or more. This is comparing apples to apples.
Basically, I strip the leaf starting at the base of the leaf and when the midrib gets about to the same size as the side ribs, I pull it off.
In cigarette production, they thrash the leaf off the midribs with a machine and get around 30% stem and attached leaf left over. When you do it by hand, you can save more leaf, leaving less leaf on the midrib and increasing product yield.
Thanks Bob! That helped a lot. I wasn't aware about tearing out the midrib but leaving the bottom part (as per your instructions). That saves tobacco so thanks for that tip.
I really wanted to try some fire cured but missed doing that. I have been harvesting my tobacco late and dodging frosts here in NC and yesterday pulled off leaves that might be too green because of the undetermined frost. I have no idea if it will brown or not. Time will tell.
I have enough air cured right now...maybe. Ha!
Anyway..since I am trying (not) to double post let me say this while I am here.
I appreciate your dedication to this forum and I think you are not only doing a superb job but you have also enlivened this forum to a great extent in a short time. Others are involved too, I know but I just wanted to Thank you for Upping it a Notch! Dan was brilliant in asking you to come forward.
Thanks Guys! _________________ When Stressed-Smoke and have a drink.
I can still get the fire-cured dark leaf, I'm only out of the Virginia Flue-Cured. I can still get the air-cured burley as well. If you want a sample of the fire-cured, PM me and I can mail it out.
