Hey this was in the back of my head the whole time. But a friend just came to me and asked me. If you keep your tobacco in a box for months to years won't it go stale like cigarettes do? I had no answer other then it has to ferment.
Now back in the dinosaur days. I remember finding a old cigarette or pack laying under my car seat like ah old french fry. I lit it up and well I'm sure you know, it tasted like crap.
Back when I used to buy cartons(stone age). I used to put them in the freezer to keep em fresh & loved it.
American Spirits Say that Because they don't use Preservatives that they can expire.
Also AFTER 2 months of my Turkish being sun cured. It tastes great, I can smoke a full cigar & inhale it without a single cough. And they are as sweet as sugar. No headaches, No sick feelings nothing. Why? Why? Why?

Great question. I don't know the answer to that but I'll give it a shot. Maybe it's the additives that are put into cigarette tobacco. I have cigarette tobacco (#18, 11 and 14) that I chopped and put in a few mason jars 5 years ago. I put different blends in each jar. I also put an apple peel in one jar and an orange peel in another. I like to experiment. When I open the jars once in a while to check it out the tobacco smells and feels just as fresh as when I put it in there. No, actually it smells better, deeper and richer. I don't smoke cigarettes any more but when I did I can tell you that after three years the tobacco was better that when I put it in the jars.
So maybe its some of the additives that do it. You know like if you put whiskey on cigarette tobacco and seal it, it will never go stale but if you put milk on it and seal it, it will go bad overnight. I know they don't put milk on their tobacco but maybe one or some of the other additives have a shelf life and when they go they bring the tobacco with it.
Just a guess. Maybe someone will research it and come up with a better answer.
As a foot note I can tell you that orange and apple tobacco in a cigarette is a bad idea. Terrible taste . . . but still fresh. |

Hi --
Good to see you here vredeman!
Maybe the cigarette isn't stale but instead is merely dry. Humidify it and the harshness may very well evaporate!
I think that Dan is probably right. reading over th list of additives they might put in cigarettes reveals things like cocoa, coconut, and other such organics that will certainly spoil over time.
