When I am ready to harvest my seeds, what is the best way to do that? I want to know how you clean them for storage. get the rubbish out.
Dan, I have ordered my seeds from you last couple of years. This past order you put in the order a pack of #18. And I want to thank you for doing so. I have 127 #18 starting to flower out and they are wonderful plants.

Hello jeebs,
I put mesh (I use regular window screen) over a sheet of paper then I start squeezing and breaking the seed pods over it. When I've finished all the pods I take the seeds and small flakes of rubbish that went through the screen and put it through a finer screen. I use one of those round screens that are made for covering pots to prevent grease spattering. What goes through these screens are mostly seeds. Very little rubbish. Then I just put the seeds in a clean dry bottle. I keep the jars of seed in a dark cool place. |

Fine screen kitchen strainer also works. Tobacco seed is so tiny, I can't really even see it too well without a lens. _________________ Those who made footprints in the sands of time did not wear loafers. |

Hi --
We collect the pods and wait for a very dry day. We break up the seed pods in a tupperware container. We run though a rough screen, then through a finer window type screen. Then we use the window screen doubled over. Then I put on a light fan and let the wind blow the particles of seed pod out. This takes a little practice and you will lose some seed here. But I think that some of the seeds which are "dry" and wouldn't germinate blow out during this step.
I got over 75% germination of my Silk Leaf seed in my test recently and I messed up the test (I had the tray in the same area I'm color curing some leaf and a fan on all the time, dumb, dried it out I'm sure even with twice or three times daily mistings).

Bob, you are correct about the "blow-away" seeds. They formed, but did not make. They're like the underformed, shriveled kernels blown out the back of a combine. Don't worry about them. It's what's in the hopper, or in your case, the seed bowl, that counts.
